MH Trico Girl
Submitted by Tom Knapp
I found this pattern in Spring Creek Strategies : Patterns, Hatches, and Techniques by Mike Heck. Fish it early in the morning as the female tricos are emerging. Funny how sometimes the easy-to-tie patterns are the most effective. Put a little of Mike Alwin's (Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop) magic floatant on the wing and it will float like a cork. Enjoy.
Materials:
Hook: TMC 206BL #20
Shuck: Black Antron
Abdomen: AZ Synthetic Dub Black
Wing: Lt Dun Snowshoe Hare
Thorax: Stalcup Microfine Dry Dubbing-Trico
Thread: Black Benecchi #14
Recipe:
Tie in shuck (tail) into the bend of the hook and dub abdomen with Arizona Synthetic Dub-Black to about the ½ mark of the shank. Tie in a clump of Light Dun Snowshoe Hare to form the wing. I'm sure most everyone knows this but the best fur comes from between the hare's toes. Dub the thorax using Stalcup Microfine Dry Dubbing-Trico and whip finish. Trim the wing and shuck to size.
Possible Substitute materials:
-Any small wide gap short
dry fly hook should work. I like TMC 206BL's because of their wide gap and the
fact that they are
barbless.
-Any black dubbing should suffice for the abdomen although the pattern in the book calls for nymph dubbing. You want the finished abdomen to be kind of spiky.
-Stalcup Microfine Dubbing-Trico is actually a deep mahogany or really dark brown color, so blended dry fly dubbing in mahogany and black should work
