· Thread: 8/0 red ,
· Hook: scud style, Tiemco 2487 sizes 16-22
· Rib: small gold or copper wire
· Abdomen: Peacock herl
· Hackle: Hungarian Partridge feather.
1. Tie thread base well down bend of hook
2. Leave 1/8 inch “red tag” and tie in small gold or copper wire for rib
3. prepare 2 peacock herls by stroking against the grain and tie in butts at rib.
4. twist herl into a ‘rope’ and advance to eye (leave small space for soft hackle).
5. Rib wire over Peacock. About 4 wraps on size #18.
6. Prep a good quality Hungarian partridge feather by stripping stem of fluff.
7. Use no more than two turns of hackle and tie down well weaving between fibers.
8. Create a pronounced red whip finish.
9. Trim out errant fibers. It should be rather sparse and “buggy” in appearance.
Fishing the Fly: It is fished ‘Dead Drift’ in the film and then stripped and held over mooching fish. I prefer to fish all soft hackles by quartering my cast across the stream and swinging it above the fish and then with a ‘strip and hold’ until the next cast. Takes are strong and sudden.
