Simpleton Midge
By Brian "Leakywaders" Stewart
Place hook in vise. Attach thread to hook near the middle of the shank. Tie in 4 to 6 strands of tan Antron yarn for the tail. Tail should be a little shorter than the length of the hook shank. Tie in a 3 or 4 inch strand of black Krystal Flash, letting the excess hang off the back of the hook. This will form the abdomen of the fly. At this point the thread should be at the bend of the hook. Take the Krystal Flash and wrap it around the thread, forming a rope of Krystal Flash. Wrap this forward about 2/3 up the hook shank. Unwrap any excess K.F. from around the thread and clip off. Tie in a small bunch of poly yarn. The excess should hang toward the rear of the hook. This will be the wingcase. Make sure you don't use to thick a piece of yarn or you will have trouble tying off. Using the spiky dubbing, form a small thorax. Pull the wingcase over the thorax, wrapping over the tag end and then under it, pinching the end between wraps of thread. Finish wrapping the head under the overhanging excess of the wingcase. Tie off. Cut off excess poly yarn, leaving some to extend out over the hook eye, similar to an Elk-hair Caddis. Cement thread wraps. |
